1,000 Chess Sets Land in Rwanda
1 year ago we received an email from Kevin Ganza titled “Greetings from Rwanda”. 1 year later we have 1,000 chess sets headed for Rwanda under the his leadership.
Kevin is the President of Igachess Club & Academy, a Chess Club established in 2021 in Kicukiro District, City of Kigali. Kevin learnt playing at the age of nine (9) from his father, Ganza joined the Chess Community in 2005 through the then National University of Rwanda (NUR) Chess Club. He played for this Club for a period of 4 years. In 2010, he qualified to be part of the Rwanda National Chess Team to represent the Country in the 39th World Chess Olympiad that took place in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia. It is the experience he got from the Olympiad participation that spurred his passion and started, in 2011, a Chess Club for kids in his neighborhood, and another Club in the then Kigali Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) where he worked as a Statistician. This passion and activities did not go unnoticed.
In 2012, Ganza got elected in the Executive Committee of the Rwanda Chess Federation (FERWADE) as Vice President, a position he held until 2016. During this period, Kevin acted as President for almost three (3) years, and a lot has been achieved during this 4-years term. Achievements in this term won him another term, this time, as President of the Federation, from 2016 to 2020. Kevin is very passionate about teaching the game of chess. He conducted both mass training (in youth centers, schools, etc.), and private training. His mission is to make Chess a popular game in country, for the Rwandan Community, especially the youth, may reap the multiple benefits that comes with playing Chess.
