Chess Foundation Offers Instruction For Youth Asylum Seekers In Maine

PORTLAND, MAINE - JULY 14: Asylum seekers from Angola take a dip in a backyard pool after practicing chess at the home of a chess club organizer on July 14, 2023 in Portland, Maine. The Portland chapter of The Gift of Chess non-profit has been teaching immigrant youth chess since January and is now holding weekly tournaments. Organizers say that learning chess helps foster critical thinking in building life skills and connecting with people across language and cultural divides, especially important while adjusting to life in the United States. Portland received a surge of asylum seekers during the first half of 2023, most of them bussed up from the U.S. southern border with Mexico after journeying thousands of miles from their home countries. Portland is traditionally known as a sanctuary city for immigrants, but the sudden arrival of some 1,500 migrants overwhelmed local municipal services, exacerbating a pre-existing housing crisis, especially for low-income residents.
